Has anyone painted a pavilion made of sunforger canvas?
I was told the paint doesn't dry but stays tacky.
However, I did some test brushfulls of straight acrylic, housepaint, and spray paint and the little bitty test areas appear to be drying OK.
I am a very cautious person about stuff like this though and I would like to hear of the painting experience of others.

My original plan was to hang sewn bands, but the test run looked Krappy. I prefer painting to sewing so I hope to be able to do that and am excited about the possibility.
Thanks :-)

Did you ask Tai? She's painted some of hers. It could also depend on the colour of the canvas as well.

I didn't ask yet. Yes that is what I should do.
I've been asking her so many various questions I thought I'd give her a break.
Never thought of the difference in color of canvas affecting the outcome,
interesting.

I'm curious too - I am making a tent and it would be fabulous to paint it!

I did some experiments on sunforger with acrylic, and also with heat set fabric paints. Neither really set to the fabric, and washed off almost completely with water. (Which would be rather a problem if it rains)

I know Panther sells a paint that is specifically soupposed to work on their sunforger tents... you might look and see what kind that is?

good luck! painted tents look so awesome :)

Thanks for the heads-up. Right now I am having a difficult time holding myself back from painting it and possibly ruining it. I actually have drawn on it with charcoal in anticipation of painting.
*sigh*

The Medieval Encampments list discusses this pretty often.

The paint of choice by folks like Johann von Drachenfels [sp?] who wrote The Pavilion Book, (which strongly advocates using sunforger) is latex house paint cut half and half with water.

It might be worth sampling with that?

I'm going to take pictures as it progresses. If nothing else it will be examples of what not to do ;-)

I believe the tents that Fearga makes have sunforger tops and are painted. You might ask her.

We're getting a black/brown tent made & she's already warned us that we can't paint the black. Oh well.

Have they mentioned if it is possible to mix colors by adding pure pigment or acrylic to a white or base paint?

Not that I recall, but I'll try to search the archives tonight when I get home after my day with MIL.

That will be great. I will be interested to see it when it's finished.
If you want to decorate you are probably more skilled than I am with using fabric for decoration.
I'm not so the brilliant with fabric.

Thanks. :-)

Another question I have is:
do they suggest watering the house paint down because it is easier to apply, or because it adheres better?

might be for flexibility- house paint can be brittle & crack/flake off on its own.

This makes sense.
Thank you.
