This morning a lady came over to buy some pottery for a gift. I used to work for her and she is on my top 10 list of women I admire most.

She was originally from the Philippines and told me that when she lived there, they pit fired pottery for their cooking pots. She said they were used all over and everything was cooked in them.
That was probably 40+ years ago when she was there, I wonder if it is the same today?

I really enjoy the thought of the consistency of craft through time.

Along these lines, at Pottery Northwest they are having visiting potters from Oaxaca, some of whom are continuing a tradition going back at least 1500 years!

Here is a link to their website (go to special events, then visiting potters from Oaxaca), the 2 in particular I'm talking about are Alberta Sanchez Mateo and Macrina Mateo Martinez (an aunt and niece). Pretty cool!

Thanks for the link.
Yes, that's the sort of thing I mean :-)

Once a Mexican potter and his son showed up at my door. He didn't speak a word of English, but I invited him into my studio and he went right to my kickwheel, laughed and threw a pot. We traded little pots, and communicated with clay.
A fun memory.

what an amazing story! some of the native women here are really impressed at my humble crafts - but I think it is more about communicating though art!

Yes, indeed. I think having the creation of crafts, even different ones, in common breaks down barriers more than just chatting could ever do. Makes people 'us' rather than 'them and us'.
