Book hinge

I'm working on longstitch books again. I am using linen for the connecting hinge. Does anyone have suggestions of a glue to attach the hinges to the covers that does not mottle and make the hinge look so stained when aforementioned glue dries?
So far I've tried wheat paste glue, Elmers, and Mod Podge, all have discolored the fabric.
My Guru is deep in the backwoods of Idaho for the summer so I can't ask him.

Hmm have you tried either fish glue or hide glue? They are both quite stinky but nice to work with in my experience

I buy my fish glue at LeeValley. I can't recall where I got my hide glue tho'

I've never done bookbindery so I don't know how they are for this application but they are good glues and if I recall correctly hide glue is a common paste used in bookbindery (I've judge this stuff)

Elmer's is polyvinal acetate. Dunno if that's similar to 'hide glue' or not, but the one time I used rabbit hide glue, it didn't feel or smell like Elmers.

ah! dunno why I was thinking that, unless it USED to be hide glue and then not :)

JL should still have my little bag of fish glue flakes somewhere...if they didnt rehydrate from the ambient moisture!

Way back when I was a little kid "they" used to tell us it was made out of horse hooves when I tried to eat it the other kids tried to eat it. That was probably healthier to eat than polyvial acetate though ;-)

Rabbit skin glue...thin and not like glue at all to me. Used to use it on canvases before painting, instead of gesso.

You know, in the deep dark recesses of my hovel I believe I have some dried rabbit skin glue. I will go on a quest to find it.

They rock for all kinds of bookbinding and scribal supplies. Don't ask me how I know since I do neither. Oh yeah I was looking for hide glue as its used in some dye recipes to keep the hand in silk.
