There was a wide variety of book styles here, including some used in contemporary Book Arts. I've added some simple book making to my classroom lesson plans just after one session.

The top book is one Jim is making. The lower book is one of the three 16th Century book he had there for us to see close up & personal. The lower one is stitched chevron style, which was done as early as Charlemagne's time.

Interior of a book he is re-binding.

Exterior of the same book, what a mess! But it will be beautiful by the time he finishes it.

Two more of Jim's luscious Gothic style books. The basket in the background is made of bookmaking leftovers by Jim's wife, Melody. They recycle so many things.

Interesting question.(???) I don't remember a smell though, other than the usual papery, booky smell of average books(???). Jim, himself always smells like wood smoke. Next time I will notice as I am ordinarily very aware of scents.

I have some older books... like several decades, not centuries, but notice that the entire experience of reading books changes with how old they are... smell, touch, sight, even the sound of the pages as you turn them... old books are such a treat...

I love the smell of woodsmoke! Yay!

My friend Sabine was doing some really stellar bookbinding before she left the SCA. It's such a beautiful art...

Yes, Whitney. I forget who knows her - it's been so long since she's played. :)
