Another 2 cents

There has been a lot of discussion recently on attaining Peerages and various ways some folks have been addressing this.
So for my input I found the following which has been going around the net in arts communities for awhile. I changed the questions to reflect the current discussion on Peerage and the frustrations some people have expressed about not being Peers.
Some comparisons are right on, others not so much.
If anyone has better re-writes, please add them!

HOW TO FEEL MISERABLE AS AN ARTIST IN THE SCA

1) Constantly compare yourself to other artists
Peers and other people pursuing the same interests.

2) Talk to your family SCA friends, Barony about what you do and expect them to cheer you on.

3) Base the success of your entire career on one project
Attaining a Peerage.

4) Stick with what you know.

5) Undervalue your expertise.

6) Let money award possibilities dictate what you do.


7) Bow to societal pressures.
no changes

8) Only do work that your family the Peers, your friends & Barony would love.

9) Do whatever the client/customer/gallery owner, patron/investor the Peers, your friends ask.

10) Set unachievable/overwhelming goals. To be accomplished by tomorrow.

again, mahybe because I feel old and crusty and curmugeonly today, I am struck with how the SCA? not so original. any group will have the same dynamic. I see it at work, and apparently in the art world as well. heck, jr high had the same dynamic.

not to say we shouldnt try and fix what ails us, but people is people, and so a due amount of wry knowing head shaking should happen sometimes too :)

IMHO you are so right. I so often see similarities and one of the things I feel is frustrating is that the SCA is actually kinder and more thoughtful than so many of these situations and that is often not seen by folks.
