morgaina: (christmas)

A few shaggy dog stories. So behind cut:

1. Wrapping paper or gift bags? I recycle gift paper I like and paper I really like I use for my Altered Book collage pages. (plastic wrapping paper, boo, hiss.
My kids are trying to be more Green and have asked me to sew fabric gift bags that can be re-used. I did a few last year and will do more this year.

2. Real or artificial tree? always have had a real tree.

3. When do you put up the tree? Maybe a week before Christmas, if the kids are home, earlier.

4. When do you take it down? Isn't it bad luck to take it down before New Years? ;-)

5. Do you like eggnog? Yes, homemade. Alas, muchas calories so not much for me this year.

6. Favorite gift received as a child: Betsy McCall doll.

7. Do you have a nativity scene? No

8. Hardest person to buy for? My nephew

9. Easiest person to buy for? My sister or maybe [livejournal.com profile] dancing_guru

10. Worst Christmas present you ever got?
When I was young my mother dedicated her existence to making me "sweet and good" (exact quote). She hated how I wanted to look. So for presents she got together with her friend, who did home perms and said friend gave me a home perm as a gift. Friend was a terrible hairdresser. I did not want 'sweet and good' hair I wanted dangerous hair. I spent my youth with sweet and good hair because it would have been a sin to say I didn't want or didn't like Mom's friend's styling.
I also was on the receiving end of sweet and good clothing until she became senile and was unable to shop on her own.

11. Mail or email Christmas cards? I make Christmas cards, so some years I don't get them out.

12. Favorite Christmas movie? Muppets Christmas movie.

13. When do you start shopping for Christmas? No set time. If I have enough money I shop all year long. This year I plan to start shopping any time now.

14. Have you ever recycled a Christmas present? Regift.
My sister makes us play dorky games on Christmas, the prizes of which are dorky gifts which I strongly suspect come from her "Secret Santa" exchange at work. I give my "Secret Santa" at work many of the dorky gifts Joyce gave me the year before. And if a staff member who was my work "Secret Santa" the year before quits, I give my new "Secret Santa" those dorky gifts. This year my work "Secret Santa", gave me a book so exceptionally dorky, I would bet the farm it is a regift.
If I gave artistic or classy gifts, they would know it was from me. Upon further thought, next year I may not care about surprise and do gifts that are more like me. But what would I do with the dorky gifts from the previous year? Dorkdom rules.

15. Favorite thing to eat on Christmas? Sister's blackened ham, my cinnamon buns. Years ago it was Gramma's "Washington Nut" pie, or Mom's huckleberry pie.

16. Clear lights or colored on the tree? Both, eclectic.

17. Favorite Christmas song? "I heard the Bells on Christmas Day", which is inspiring to me. But I like All of them with the exception of the accursed "Drummer Boy"

18. Travel at Christmas or stay home? To my sister's for dinner, 30 miles away so that's not much travel.

19. Can you name all of Santa’s Reindeer? Blindfolded and on my head.

20. Angel or star on top of tree? Stained Glass Angel.

21. Open presents Christmas Eve or morning? Santa doesn't arrive until midnight Christmas Eve, so logically, how could one open one's prezzies BEFORE Santa even gets there, a conundrum?

22. Most annoying thing this time of year? Not enough money to get the presents, food, & decorations I'd like to. Advertisements pushing consume, consume, consume in October, how my students get out of control this season.

23. Do you decorate your tree in any theme or color? Nope.

24. What do you leave for Santa? Used to do cookies and carrot for the reindeer. No longer :-(

Christmas is different without small children.

The only rendition of "Drummer Boy" that I can stand is Lou Rawls. If you have a mechanism to listen to mp3 files, I will happily send it off to you so you can share in the unexpected joy that is his version of that song.

Trust me.
