These are some photos I got back from the Photographer today. As I said on my LJ I thought the photography was not well done. But I would like to share a few more pics.

This is a large platter with a griffin motif that was borrowed...OK stolen, from a Sythian bridle bit.

This is a pit fired vase, not large about 7" tall with the dancing goat.

This is a large vase, about 18" tall, Norse motif. The hot spots obliterate some of the detail, grrrr.

Gallery directors & other nibs look for artists who work in series. They look for similarity leading to growth. This is the mark of a "mature artist". Thus I reveal myself as a 3rd. grader, but a happy 3rd grader.

Why didn't the photographer use a black background, or graduated gray?

Thanks,
Inspired by Byzantine ceramics, but the colors are pure 2000s.

Really? 'Cause the squiggly bits in the olive green parts look a lot like a korean plate I have a picture of kicking around.

The squiggly bits are Byzantine inspired, not to say something similar wasn't used other places as well. The lavender and teal glaze colors are fairly modern, plus their combinations.

Yup, still loving those Scythian platters. You're torturing me here.

I credit you for turning my eyes to Sythian. In particular that Moot before you & Skeggi stepped up when everyone was pouring over those breathtaking Sythian designs.

This is a professional photographer, not a friend, right?

If so, then you ought to take your pieces back. Reflective objects need indirect lighting, which the "hot spots" in these images seem to indicate he did not use. Looks like floods straight on to me (but what do I know?).

When I was working on the images you sent me in my Photoshop class, the teacher, who is just as nosy as I am, leaned in and suggested that you take your pieces outside and shoot them in indirect sunlight, so the colors are bright and the glazes do not pick up the lighting.

That aside, these are lovely. I'm especially covetous of the top piece.

Yep, professional photographer.

"If so, then you ought to take your pieces back."
*sigh* I'm not real good with that sort of thing.

After considering, I have decided that I am going to talk to them about it. It was almost a month ago that I took the pottery to them and at that time discussed what I wanted for backgrounds among other things and this was ignored. I really hate confrontation and it's even more difficult in a smallish town because everyone knows everyone in the arts community and it's likely I'll someday sit in a chair next to her at some meeting or other.
But, I don't think they fullfilled their contract acceptably.
So I will contact them.

Living in Mendocino, the land of artists and small circles, I understand what you're talking about.

However, this is business, and, if this woman is a professional, she made a contract with you of one stripe or another. It may very well be she didn't understand what you want. If her normal subjects are people, for example, or paintings or something not quite so shiny, she may not be used to the lighting requirements and just put up her usual stuff.

Do yourself a favor and write up exactly what you want. Black background, indirect lighting and whatever else you want. Bullet each item so they have a check list.

Remember that you paid for this.

That said, if you chicken out, I can probably fix a bunch of it. I did some of that on the images on your site. Colored areas are simple; hot spots on the designs are things I might not be able to fix very well, but I'm willing to give it a go.

Go get 'em!

Really!?! It's gorgeous! *does the dance of covetous glee* Something that amazing gets hung up on a wall so visitors can covet, too.

Thanks, I'm glad you like them. I'm pretty happy with how they came out.

I agree with you. The photographs could have been better. You need a professional who understands ceramic art. This person doesn't seem to. We are lucky that Hroar's apprentice is a very very good photographer and is a ceramic artist as well. She did some very beautiful photos for us, with a white background and indirect lighting. Too bad you don't live in Caid.

Of course, you are! I hope I didn't imply anything other than if you lived here, you would have access to my apprentice and her great skill at photography.

Of course :-)

I like to go with professionals for professional work, it's just finding the 'right' professional.

Thems real purty. Yeah, that's pretty sucky, so-called pro work. It's been a while since my degree, but there are special light boxes and diffusers just so that anything that has a shine doesn't have a hotspot. Unacceptable.

If you're not good at that thing, do you have a child or friend who is a bit more bite back? Maybe they can go in with you and do the strong arm thing.

That's what I was thinking, it doesn't seem professional.

As for taking it back I think I'm just going to have to gird my loins and do it.

Lovely honey! Simply lovely.

Oh and good for you on going back to the photographer - that is not professional grade. Good luck.
