The contents of Maiolica albarello/drug/pharmacy jars were originally kept closed by use of a piece of parchment tied on with a cord. Any ideas for good substitutions for parchment?

I use plain undyed tanned sheepskin. I got them from Ebay. But a friend of mine uses parchment, I think. I'll check with him and see where he got it.

Thank you, that would be excellent.

Vellum? I sometimes use oiled linen, and for some spices, I use linen treated with a combination of wax and oil.

my friend uses wax-saturated linen, like the person below.

if you take linen and paint it with melted beeswax it works GREAT. we use it in camp all the time. warm it up a bit over the fire or in the sun and it works like reusable saran wrap :). would work great over a jar.

dont paint it too thick or it will crack :)

is this something you're thinking of selling? (she says hopefully....)

Is it Olive Oil that you use?
Thanks for the suggestions.

That's a great idea, and I will try it. Thank you.

I'm experimenting with maiolica painting, I may end up liking them better than underglazes. I'm making some of varied jars. Yes the plan is to sell or barter them as soon as they satisfy me.
