Handsome Goth Son finally contacted me. He is extremely busy, this being his thesis year combined with having to find another place to live quickly. He found one and is excited about it, but it's more expensive, needs furnishings, and he has to move all his things from one place to another across Portland without a vehicle.

My first impulse, of course, is to take off work and go over to help him. However, I have to remind myself that if I did my job right, my grown-up kids can do things without me mother-henning around them. And I know he can do it.

It seems like so much of what I do is to make myself obsolete and not required for their survival.

Weird that.

It's a hard balance for us moms. I find, like it seems you do, that we really like spending time with our grownup kids. It's hard to let go and not want to be there to help out. As you say,it's part of the process, but I don't think we have to back off too much. They still need the village, they're just expanding theirs. Besides think of the fun things you could do in P-Town.

It is difficult. And I have to approach each kid with help in different ammounts and different ways.
I'd love a short trip to Portland, but at work staff got a re-newed lecture today on: "we aren't hiring substitutes, BE HERE!" and he works weekends.
I hope that it is enough for him to know that if he really was desperate I'd be there.

That's what I'm aiming for with my son. He's still thinking I should prepare the world for his eventual domination, though. :-)

I'm frequently torn between wishing my girl was an automoton so that she'd just do what she's told and being so proud that she's so independent and self assured... kinda scary for an not quite 12 year old... but the proud wins. I just hope that as she gets older she'll not necessarily "need" me around but just "want" me around... *sniffles*

*wrinkles her nose* they didn't tell you about this in pre-natal!

*hugs*
