The [livejournal.com profile] dancing_guru and I went out a third time, this time we changed areas and found huckleberries. Lots of them although they were small making us have to work hard to get the amount we wanted.

We were so proud of our catch that we sort of used them as a centerpiece. We were surprised to find them not picked over because the patches were not up in the deep woods, but rather, fairly accessable. Perhaps people have not been out because according to my sister there is a sow bear and her cubs that have been in the area and I did see bear scat. D_G & I were not afraid, however, as we were guarded and protected by the Cocker Spaniel of courage, who has yapping as his super power. There were deer around as well as extremely crabby chipmunks and ground squirrels. But the happy point is that we have enough for our pie for Christmas dinner, a pie tomorrow, and we had huckleberries on ice cream Thursday night. Heaven.

We could also share them with HGS, who is still here for a few days before he returns to PDX.

I am still flailing away attempting to bake bread over the coals in a cloche:

But alas, I still have a lot to learn. In an area as small as a brazier, I believe it needs a smaller cloche, so I have recently thrown a new one. In addition I think a smaller piece of dough should have been used. I did not put coals under the base this time, just around the sides, but as large as the cloche is I probably didn't get it hot enough before putting the dough in.

Yay huckleberries! I have some huckleberry yogurt, and it makes me think of you. :)

We should consider cooking plans if fires are allowed at Crown...yes?

Now that is an association I am flattered by ;-)

I am still thinking about Crown haven't decided. I'd prefer taking the Subaru if I go, which would change the camping accouterments I could haul somewhat.

Eh...well, we'll make it work. :) I've got a brazier we could probably cook over.

I could fit everything I usually bring with the exception of the pavilion and the pop-up in the Subaru.

Hm. Well...maybe we could have the Daed-Inn for Wayward Girls this time and wing it on the kitchen? Must consider. Oh, and ask [livejournal.com profile] daedin. ;)

Wow, be sure to post when you succeed. I have been mulling this over in my head for weeks, now. I was also thinking about a *mini-stove* and had been considering something like a Tajine... but I was thinking that this dish probably doesn't store enough heat for success. I have been considering using Soapstone instead of clay... SO naturally I am quite interested on Campbaking.

I know it can be done. Mershiga from Tir Righ did a beautiful job baking bread with a cloche over coals.
I recently saw some pictures of Greek clay mini-stoves, I don't quite remember the source however.

Huckleberries!!! Yay!!

HGS is just so...well...handsome. It's comforting to know that unadulterated evil comes in such a pleasing form :) Love him.

There is definitely a place for you in the Daed-Inn if you choose to pack light for Crown. We'll work that all out :)

I am feeling pretty positive about Crown at the moment. So your generous offer sounds good. I'm fairly certain Freya & Adam/Cleg(?) won't be going. She has to work most likely.

The long drive alone is the only thing causing me to hesitate.

Well, I certainly suss that, but it's easier to face (I find), when it's a longer weekend. It doesn't leave me feeling as much that 1/3 of the event was driving :)

Oh, I wasn't aware it was the long weekend. *duh*
