I have experienced something similar to 3, although not entirely in the US. I caught it in Morocco, experienced its fullest effects in Spain, and was still sick when I returned to the US.

Nasty stuff isn't it? Sorry you had it as well.
I was attending a "Healing Arts" gathering (which is pretty darn ironic). We ate communally. The sprouts were left over from the recent "Rainbow Gathering".
Since that time I've always been a fuss budget about sanitation when I work in feast kitchens or cook the feasts. And all within earshot are in danger of hearing my story.
