Monkeybung was right again

About the amphora.
The cork stopped leaking over night. Thanks :-)
I am surprised it took so long to stop dripping and, in general, I'm still not pleased with the design of the spigot. I think they may be sold more for looks than for serious function.
I like the looks, but in general the overall design could use improvement. Maybe [livejournal.com profile] daedin's idea of an amphora in sand is the way to go, or a 2 gallon lidded pitcher???

It's interesting how self-cooling the water evaporation makes the pot. It is so much colder than the air, even after sitting for over 12 hours at room temperature. And I can imagine it filled with ice water during a hot event, ummmmm.

"Bunghole."

Had to be done.

Uh...HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

I think it looks great! I should break mine out and start taking it to events again. It's not as cool as that one and doesn't have the nifty stand, but it works. It's ceramic (a prize for winning a siege cooking contest) but has a brass spigot that's caulked in. I like the look of your spigot much better. Maybe you could look around and try a few different ones to find one that works better.

Overall, though, pretty cool!

Stay cool. Literally. I know it's not as hot here, but why oh why is it 80 at 10am? Just wrong.

Thanks,
How well does the brass spigot work?
I don't want to do another similar design to this one until I find better spigots.

Once you figure this out, I would LOVE to talk with you about buying one from you, if possible, but for our home use. Do you think they do well with water in them all the time?

[identity profile] copper-oxide.livejournal.com 2007-07-16 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
I carved the interior of the spigot out a bit of what I could and it works somewhat better now.
I can't think of why it wouldn't work fine filled with water all the time, should be OK. I will keep it filled this week and see how it does.

Cisterns are wonderful things...8-)

[identity profile] copper-oxide.livejournal.com 2007-07-16 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
Do you make them too?
If so, how are the spigots working for you?

[identity profile] hroar.livejournal.com 2007-07-17 02:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Just fine it seems, bu tthen I take mine apart and clean off all teh wood burrs and wood shavings...poke a neddle too through the holes to mke sure they are clear.

[identity profile] copper-oxide.livejournal.com 2007-07-17 03:10 pm (UTC)(link)
I did that too, and it helped.
I consider now my issues are with the cork.

What a beautiful amphora! Imagine, cooling water the period way! (It works best if it is dry, not humid. Better evaporation that way.)

[identity profile] copper-oxide.livejournal.com 2007-07-16 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
Thank you.
Yes, that makes sense, you remember on this side of the mountains the heat is primarily dry. Coronation should be dry too.

Lovely! When/if these go into production I would love to get one.

[identity profile] copper-oxide.livejournal.com 2007-07-17 02:44 am (UTC)(link)
I'd be delighted to make one for you too. Come over at Coronation, [livejournal.com profile] parlor_games too, and we can discuss design. I'm camping with jarlshof but plan to be cooking on the open fire with [livejournal.com profile] onorie too.
I'll probably make these with commission rather than having them in my regular line.

That's very nice. I want one, too! There is, however, one thing that has me scratching my head. Now maybe it's just because I'm a guy, but from the angle at which the photo's taken--and maybe it's just my imagination or the odd molds wafting out of the fridge--but the spigot sort of looks like...er...well...you know.

First the bunghole thing, now this.
I knew it, it was just a matter of time.
