morgaina: (welcome to Idaho)

My sister just told me this story.
Mom was staying with Joyce (my sister) when she died. Her house is in a tiny town on the edge of the woods. It was hot out and she had the windows all open, Joyce was outside watering flowers when she looked up & saw about 10 huge birds with immense wingspans circling her house. The neighbor came out to watch too and said they were 'turkey vultures'. They circled for quite awhile. Mom died about 6 hours later.
Turkey vultures (in the local venacular called 'buzzards') are not common birds in that area. Joyce said she had never seen any before and I have only sighted them once, even as often as I have been in that woods.

This strikes me as poetic. Nature's attempt to show compassion. I'm truly moved by this image. Our horses used to all gather around our mare all day long prior to her foaling. It was spooky and very cool.

While a little creepy and foreboding, I think it's actually pretty cool. Maybe her spirit took up in one of those vultures. Or maybe they just came to show her the way. Either way, not such a bad thing.

There has been a huge influx of turkey vultures around here in the past 7 years that I've lived here. I used to notice them while driving south of Eugene, but since then, they've moved north quite a bit. I see them every day soaring on the updrafts along the Willamette on my way home. Maybe you'll be seeing more as the years go by.

Thank you for this thought, Miranda. They know things that we've forgotten. I wish I had been there to see it.

Thanks Kolfina, I'd like to share these ideas with Joyce, I could think it would comfort her, but she's quite traditionally religious and wont consider some ideas. The image is adding to my 'wild birds' contemplation of the year.

It would be good to see turkey vultures more often. They are such magnificent creatures.
