I did a trade with Istvan for a simple pine box for events. I would like to do some faux decorative elements on it.
I believe there is a kind of putty that can be formed/sculpted as a low relief on wood then painted over. Does anyone know what this is called, or if it is a good material, or if it will fall off later or not plastic enough to form shapes well, or or or?

In period (and beyond) the Italians sometimes built up layers of gesso and then carved those. I believe it can also be molded, but not sure.

Well, there's sculpy. It probably wouldn't hold up to camping/packing.

How are you with a jeweler's saw? You could do some cool things with some scrap metal and a saw/drill. If you have access to a Foredom or some other hand drill (the more common, non long shaft driven model name is eluding me) you can freehand inset designs. How about faux painting? Stencils? Leather?

Oi the shadow of period approach looms over my head. Heh.
I was thinking a little quicker and, quite frankly, easier. But I will keep that in mind if I can't find the material in question.

I did think about faux painting. But decided that I want some actual texture. Right now I am thinking of something plastic that I can manipulate. I will go to my favorite hardware store and see if they have anything similar to what I want.

Sculpt in clay, then fire it? I dont know..It seems most stuff is gonna be fragile in some way or teh other anyway. Why not use clay? You can sculpt it thin..

The way that I plan to use it would cause the clay to warp in a major way.

Yea..I can see that..I am at a lost as to what to suggest. Car body putty? I dont know.

I have been contemplating this gesso idea. Could you please direct me to a source or more information?
That really is the sort of thing I am thinking about doing. It takes me awhile to have an idea coalesce.
