I am spending all the time I can in the studio. I'm going to be gone so much in March, April & May, that I'm trying hard to get ahead.

I finally came down with a head cold that a lot of people around me had been hacking my way. But thanks to the beloved [livejournal.com profile] elfreda who suggested 10,000 IUs of Vitamin D3, it was gone in a day!! Seriously. I'm still amazed.

the University's Jazz Festival is about to happen and they are bringing visual arts as well as musical arts this year. So there is a smaller "Art Walk" which they say isn't an Art Walk which means they don't have to have Openings for us :-p The Potter's Guild is showing in one store and the PWA has a show in the Hospital. I have plenty of work for both settings.

The kiln is firing and I hope the kiln gods are smiling. I have been working on maiolica apothecary/abarellos for Eduardo. It was wonderful fun to make them, but now it's up to higher forces.

Before firing, all dry and chalky. You can see the pencil marks where I drew the design on first. (Naughty potter, it should have been ponced)

This holds a little more than a quart. I mixed a low-fire maiolica glaze without the lead base.

The smaller jar is the other side of the jar above. The larger abarello holds a bit less than 2qts. You can see it is intended for Strutto.

These are earthenware, to stay closer to period. I have been doing more firing of period dish and cook ware at earthenware temperatures. Because of the porosity there has to be a difference in how foods store and how earthenware pipkins, cauldrons, etc. cook foods differently than higher fired ware.

Wow. Simply amazing. I just can't seem to do stuff like that.

Are you going to make it to June Faire this year?

Gwen, you do such great work, and I admire it so much. AND I know you can do anything you set your mind to. So there!

I would like to go to June Fair again. Do similar to what we did last year? (Other than I would plan to practice more on my kickwheel in anticipation.)

I didn't know albarellos were used to cook in? I thought they were used to store medicines?

Aside from that, WOW. Gorgeous!

No not cooking in abarellos to my knowledge.
I was speaking in general of Medieval/Renaissance Western Pottery. I will clarify what I wrote.

Yes, same as last year, except that we may have an addition to the encampment. Rich's mom is moving up here soon, and she will probably be with us at JF. So I'll have to put you in a tent by the RV (which we have or can borrow), so you will still be with us. That is, unless you want to camp with someone else, and that's okay. We usually see Daedin there.

We've made some improvements on the wheel. Added a bit more weight to the fly wheel, and there are now texture stips (roofing tiles) on the surface for better grip when kicking. It should work better.

The texture strips should be very helpful, I had forgotten how much slipperiness there was. Have you tried throwing with them on? We were doing a lot of throwing that weekend so it was very slick.
I have a modern tent and my period pavilion, I could bring either.

What is "Strutt"?

Please, please, to be coming to June Faire, if you can! I

I know what you mean about the late period dilemma. Most of the work I like to do is later than my persona.

I'm not sure what beasties those are??? Dragon like things. The complete word is "Strutto" (the "o" was hidden in the pic) and means pig fat. A much prettier term than pig fat.
I plan to be at June Fair.

Thank you. I'm going to start using the term "strutto" more often. Pity I don't speak Italian, so I don't know the correct pronunciation.
There is just no way of saying "Ham fat" without thinking of a character from
Lil Abner ;-)

OMG OMG OMG those are so gorgeous!! I can't wait to see them (and you) in person. Will you be coming to Kingdom Arts & Sciences as well, or just your work?

With the symposium the month after I'll possibly get to see you two months in a ROW! Squee!

Thank you. I'm planning on Kingdom A&S, Culinary Symposium....and Empty Bowl painting at Daedin's. I cannot possibly explain how much I am looking forward to being somewhere that is not Moscow and with friends. I hope I can see your baby guy.
The notice hasn't gone out about the Empty Bowl painting quite yet. Chatting to be accomplished soon.

I am trying not to do too much testifying at work and with friends about the Vitamin D3, my cure was miraculous, but everyone hears so much unasked for advise about cold and flu cures that I am trying to be a little more cool than I usually am ;-)
