I posted previously that I found a plate that I like better than any Medieval design I have yet seen. It can be found here: http://www.discoverislamicart.org/database_item.php?id=object;ISL;es;Mus01;3;en
So, of course, I used the design.

Done in underglazes as was the original. I didn't include the caligraphy because I never feel that I know its exact meaning. The shape of the band through the center & lettering on the original I like too and may do something similar.

Again with the Pelican design, this time done with champleve. I really like the negative space formed by the bird's head and left wing.

another calligraphy option . . .

is taken from a medieval example of fake Islamic calligraphy. That is, it's supposed to look like a calligraphic rendering of the name of God, but its symmetry has been enhanced, so it doesn't actually say anything.
Re: another calligraphy option . . .
I wouldn't want to do that.

That is interesting about the illiteracy. The lettering in the original plate is primitive, perhaps that potter was too???

I need to go open a window to replenish the air I just sucked out of the room. Twice. You rock. Just sayin.
