Righting a wrong

(Sekret Santz filtered). After what must have been an arduous trip it was finally delivered, so am taking the filter off!

The wrong is there aren't enough rat themes on ceramic ware (or anything for that matter) so I had to right this particular oversight with the use of underglazes for my Sekret Santz gift to [livejournal.com profile] parlor_games. The guideline was less than $10. on materials and this was probably that.

I had so much fun doing this.

Detail of one of the rattus rattuseseseses.

Wonderful! The little tails hanging outside the color band area great touch. (Surely, you must want to do wolves, too.)

Thank you.
Wolves would be an interesting idea and I just flashed on a possible design.
Of course the closest relative that I have to model for me is a cocker spaniel. (heh heh, kidding, we can do wolves)

She. Will. SQUEE! Like Kermie, over there! What a wonderful gift!

[identity profile] copper-oxide.livejournal.com 2008-12-20 04:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks, it was fun to do. I did most of the painting at work so the students could see me work. One of the cool things about my school is that none of the kids are prissy. I might have gotten some "oh gross(es)" with a typical population, but these kids were interested.

The fun thing about Us (and Goths, I suppose) is that we'll look at something like that and be impressed with the artisanship and the detail and the skill and care that went into making it (and Goths will think "Ooh! Rats are NEAT!").

People Who Are Not Us will wonder why on earth someone would paint something with vermin on it.

You could probably find a niche market in the Counter Culter scene with those...

[identity profile] copper-oxide.livejournal.com 2008-12-20 04:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes indeed, it's great to find that attitude.
I saw a friend from High School in the grocery store and we chatted for awhile and I was reminded why I will never go to a class reunion, dear and sweet person as she is.
Speaking of Goths
I do some pretty cool skulls on things for HGS, and I wondered about marketing those. Just don't know where. And they are work intensive so would cost $$$$

[identity profile] freewaydiva.livejournal.com 2008-12-20 04:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Have you looked at Etsy.com?

[identity profile] copper-oxide.livejournal.com 2008-12-20 05:09 pm (UTC)(link)
I looked into it about a year ago, but didn't follow through.
There are approximately a kazillion potters on it, and those I've talked to haven't done that well on it. So I don't know????

[identity profile] freewaydiva.livejournal.com 2008-12-20 05:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, but does their stuff have cool rats and skulls on it? I think not.

[identity profile] copper-oxide.livejournal.com 2008-12-20 05:15 pm (UTC)(link)
heh, heh

[identity profile] mrq-laurellen.livejournal.com 2008-12-20 05:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Holy Freakin' Awesomeness, Batman!!!

[identity profile] hroar.livejournal.com 2008-12-20 05:01 pm (UTC)(link)
You did them very well!

[identity profile] copper-oxide.livejournal.com 2008-12-20 05:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you.
It was a lot of fun.

[identity profile] gulenay-barb.livejournal.com 2008-12-20 05:07 pm (UTC)(link)
I Love It! and of course, being a bit selfish, thought "Hmmm, Wow, she made the rats look good, I wonder what she could do for us Pigs?" (there are plenty of unflattering representations out there on ceramics, tshirts illustrations....)

[identity profile] copper-oxide.livejournal.com 2008-12-20 05:11 pm (UTC)(link)
My middle son is also year of the pig, & I did a mix of a sythian/celtic boar for him. Older son & DIL are rabbits, so I did some Medieval era Middle Eastern hares for them & liked the way those came out.

[identity profile] gulenay-barb.livejournal.com 2008-12-20 05:23 pm (UTC)(link)
they sound very cool, I'd love to see pics?

[identity profile] copper-oxide.livejournal.com 2008-12-20 07:49 pm (UTC)(link)
The boys have them now, so I don't think I have pictures of them right now. Oldest kids' are in storage probably. Middle son, I never know about him.

[identity profile] joycebre.livejournal.com 2008-12-20 05:25 pm (UTC)(link)
now we all want plates. I need plates with sleeping rabbits. (and I never thought to look on Etsy for pottery - I just buy it at events and fairs)

[identity profile] doll-paparazzi.livejournal.com 2008-12-21 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
That looks great! What did you use? Duncan underglazes or what? Really great work.

[identity profile] copper-oxide.livejournal.com 2008-12-21 04:02 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks, I used several underglazes I had on hand, they included Duncan, Duncan Concepts, Speedball, & Spectrum.

[identity profile] gwen-the-potter.livejournal.com 2008-12-21 01:25 am (UTC)(link)
Wonderful! She will love it!

[identity profile] mistresshuette.livejournal.com 2008-12-21 01:54 am (UTC)(link)
Wonderful! You are such a good artist as well as a potter! Although I have to say that these don't look like Rattus rattus. They look more like Rattus norvegicus. Yeah I know. I am nitpicking. I just hope they aren't plague rats ... :-D

[identity profile] copper-oxide.livejournal.com 2008-12-21 04:00 am (UTC)(link)
No, you're right, they are similar to rattus norvegicus.
I just like the name rattus rattus.
My sister used to call the kids "ruggus rattus" when they were little.

[identity profile] daedin.livejournal.com 2008-12-21 02:58 am (UTC)(link)
Oh my Goodness! She is going to *freak out*!! Your mad skilz leave me in awe, my friend!

[identity profile] copper-oxide.livejournal.com 2008-12-21 04:06 am (UTC)(link)
Aww, thank you.

Beautiful rattusi - what a treasure!

[identity profile] copper-oxide.livejournal.com 2008-12-21 04:07 am (UTC)(link)
Have you ever tried painting with underglazes? They are a lot like using watercolors, you might like them!

[identity profile] aelfgyfu.livejournal.com 2008-12-21 06:01 am (UTC)(link)
oooh! Very nice!

[identity profile] not-justagirl.livejournal.com 2008-12-22 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
