Modern and Medieval pottery

Some things out of my latest kiln load.

I did a lot of glaze experimentation in this load, two of the new glazes, out of about 12 experiments came out well enough that I will make them again. The good ones are modern-style glazes however. The quest for perioid glazes is still not at an end it appears.


This modern set is a commission for the baby of a family who raises sheep. Because it's for a child who will be learning to eat by himself someday, I made the rim of the plate curved in so he will be able to scoop his food to the edge and feed himself more successfully. The design was using underglazes and I enjoyed it enough that I am going to use the basic design again, maybe with bears and bulls like loupnoir suggested.


Another modern, The top blue is one of the new glazes I plan to re-use. The black lines are a faux cuerda seca, which is going to obsess me for awhile I think.


Coffee maker and server. I Might try making a coffee server for a Norman style tripod jug.


Green coffee maker/server. Holds a bit more than 7 cups.


Two aquamaniles, made for a local feast I am organizing in September.


Bowl from Byzantine Serres. This is low-fire and hold not quite 2 qts.


Another low-fire Byzantine bowl, the shape often seen in MiddleEastern, Byzantine ware. I suspect part of the reason for the shape was lack of plastic clay available in the Middle East and having to work with hard paste.

I love those coffee pot shapes. Countess Liz needs to see them. She wants a coffee pot, and I have not gotten around to it yet.

Steal away, it's not like I dreamed it up myself ;-) and even if I did it would be good and fine.
I think I'm going to do some distinctly medieval style pitchers with coffee makers to fit. That would be pretty cool. And when you aren't making coffee, remove the coffee maker part and it could set on the feast table as a period style jug too.

You could do a whole Chinese Zodiac series on the kids plate/bowl set. That would be super cute. :) Because those are super cute!

Thank you. They are some of my favorites to do. It's interesting how free and loose the ceramics were compared to the rest of Byzantine customs.

Hummm, maybe if I had the exact measurement of the opening of one of your jugs I could make a coffee filter holder and a lid for it. Still don't think I'll have enough work to fill a kiln before the times in question though.

Thanks, the brown guy is supposed to be a ram....heh heh, but they were hard to tell what is what in the period examples too. Some pictures of the period guys had the liquid come from the nostrils when poured.

I've kind of run out of inspiration for making pottery this summer so I appreciate seeing your, Hroar's and Gwen's works. I am hoping motivation returns in the fall when the weather cools off. I am shooting for doing more elaborately decorated bowls for your Empty Bowls project next year so I am keeping a book of ideas for designs to paint/carve. I seem to freeze up when I have fired alot of bowls and need to paint them with different designs all at once.

One of the great things about craft is that we don't have to be inspired to come up with ideas of different things we want to do. We can keep working on the things already done and try to perfect them, make the shapes just a little better. I don't worry too much about getting new ideas, they come when they come, but improving what I do now is, and always will be, ongoing.
It is very, very good to see what other people are doing however.
